Hidden deep in the Austrian Alps lies the Kölnbrein Dam, Austria’s tallest dam at 200 meters high! But behind the epic views and scenic drive through hand-carved tunnels, there’s a wild history most visitors never hear. Cracks started forming as soon as the reservoir was filled. It took decades of engineering fixes (including freezing the dam joints!) to make it fully operational. Today, this dam powers part of a massive system producing over 1,200 GWh/year, enough to supply hundreds of thousands of homes. Bonus: It also has a skywalk, bungee jumping, and alpine rowing at 1,902m. Drive up the Maltatal Hochalmstraße. It’s steep, narrow, stunning… and unforgettable.
